Tropical Storm Debby has caused extensive flooding throughout the Coastal Empire in Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry, resulting in severe impacts on hundreds of families. The aftermath of the storm has left many struggling to cope with the devastating consequences of the flooding.
In both states, the system unleashed more than a foot of rain, causing entire neighborhoods to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in various cities and counties.
As of Thursday, August 8th, hundreds of American Red Cross disaster workers are providing assistance to those affected by Debby. The organization has opened up more than a dozen shelters across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, as reported in a recent news release.
According to a press release, the Red Cross officials are expecting a rapid change in the number of people seeking assistance and shelter locations over the next few days due to the heavy rainfall caused by Debby that is affecting multiple states. The Red Cross is providing essential health services in some areas and assisting in the replacement of items like prescription medications and eyeglasses in the shelters.
On August 5th, the storm hit the Big Bend region of Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane before transitioning to a tropical storm and moving into south Georgia. After that, it gradually moved along the coast of Savannah and eventually made its way into the Atlantic Ocean. On Thursday, it made a second landfall near Bulls Bay, South Carolina.
