LUPE Votes, a grassroots political organization located in the Rio Grande Valley, had no intention of endorsing anyone in the United States presidential race.
That is, until Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the Democratic Party’s most likely nominee.
According to a news release, the group has decided to support Harris, a former United States Senator from California and California Attorney General.
“Through a community-led endorsement process, the organization shifted its original plans to not endorse a presidential candidate after President Biden dropped his re-election bid,” according to a release.
Dani Marrero Dani Marrero, the Deputy Director of LUPE Votes, provided the following explanation:
“This election is about more than just one candidate; it is about our families, our future, and our rights. We support Kamala Harris’s decision to reject Trump’s extreme Project 2025 program, which seeks to take away our liberties and drag us backward.
“We’re building the power we need to protect the vast majority of border voters who want a state and country where all of us can thrive and live with dignity, no matter our race, gender, or background.”
“A LUPE Votes endorsement signals which candidates we believe will work alongside the Pueblo to achieve that purpose.”
Marrero Hi made the following statement: “We’re ready to push through to Election Day and get Harris into office and continue organizing with working families in South Texas for generations to come.”
In addition to Harris, LUPE Votes supports Michelle Vallejo in the Texas Congressional District 15 contest.
LUPE Votes was founded in 2021.
