Governor Glenn Youngkin has signed 18 new bills aimed at improving support for Virginians with developmental disabilities. This legislative package, which received bipartisan support, focuses on enhancing inclusivity and accessibility in critical sectors such as education, recreation, law enforcement, and transitional services. The move is expected to significantly benefit the community and provide them with the necessary resources to lead better lives.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Youngkin expressed his dedication to improving the lives of this community. He recognized that Virginia has not provided adequate support and resources to Virginians with developmental disabilities for too long. As Governor, he made a promise to transform the level of care available to this community. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating, championing, and speaking up for Virginians. Governor Youngkin was pleased that the legislative package and Right Help, Right Now plan will have a life-changing impact on Virginia families and transform the level of care for Virginians with developmental disabilities for years to come.
Furthermore, the newly approved biennium budget has included substantial financial measures targeted towards enhancing this endeavor. A staggering amount of $247 million has been dedicated to 3,440 priority one waiver slots. Thanks to Youngkin’s leadership, this funding increment has led to a total of 4,540 extra slots, signifying a significant surge in the state’s capability to assist individuals with developmental disabilities.
Virginia’s approach to developmental disability services is evolving, with a legislative and financial push to provide those affected with the necessary support and resources for a better quality of life. This commitment to inclusivity and proper care sets a precedent for future initiatives in the state, reflecting a forward-thinking perspective.
