Changes to Oklahoma vehicle registration from Sept. 1 explained in Ready, Set, Tag!

Starting September 1, registering a newly purchased car will undergo a significant change in Oklahoma City. The impetus behind this change stems from a terrible accident that occurred nearly seven months ago, which is now slowly fading into the past.

Maressa, the mother of Mason Treat, expressed her gratitude for the incredible support they have received, stating that it has been instrumental in helping Mason heal.

Back in January, Mason Treat, the son of Maressa and Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat, was pulled over on the side of I-40 in Yukon while he was in his Dodge Charger.

In the dash camera video, the deputy can be seen asking, “Is there a reason why there’s no tag on your vehicle?” as he greets the driver with a good morning.

“Understood, sir,” replied Treat.

A private seller was the source of the purchased vehicle. At present, individuals who opt for private car purchases are given a 60-day window to register and tag the vehicle. The law underwent some changes a few years ago, but some individuals working in law enforcement are unaware of the updated process, as dealership purchases follow a different protocol. Tragically, the disaster occurred 14 minutes after the stop.

The Charger was hit by a pickup truck that was going at around 70 mph on I-40, which also caused the officer to be struck.

On Wednesday, July 31, the Mason Treat Act was ceremonially signed.

After the signing, Mason Treat expressed his gratitude towards everyone who showed support for him. He mentioned that it meant a lot to see that everyone cared about him.

Oklahoma has implemented a law to simplify the process of vehicle registration.

Jay Doyle, CEO of Service Oklahoma, aims to reduce the amount of paper tags found on the streets in Oklahoma.

Beginning September 1st, pre-registration of newly purchased cars is required within two days of the purchase, regardless of whether the car is bought from a private seller or a dealer. Typically, dealers take care of this process, but in the case of a private sale, buyers or sellers can complete the pre-registration either online or in person at a tag agency.

Doyle mentioned that the metal plate would be sent to the residential address of the individual by the tag agents.

Within ten days of purchasing the car, it is mandatory to affix the metal plate with pre-registration decals that indicate pre-registration. After that, there is a 60-day window to complete the registration process by paying the tax and obtaining the title. This new law is aimed at avoiding any confusion and is expected to bring better clarity.

Greg Treat expressed his hope to bridge the gap and safeguard individuals such as Mason and the deputy who sustained severe injuries in the accident.

According to officials, there won’t be any additional charges involved in the process. In case you decide to trade in your car or buy a vehicle from a private seller while keeping your existing plate, you can simply obtain the necessary decals for pre-registration purposes.
