The Kansas City Chiefs’ NFL kicker, Harrison Butker, who is also known for his strong Christian beliefs, has recently gained attention for expressing some controversial views. His latest remarks have been deemed highly misguided, and he should be awarded a prize for having such an erroneous perspective.
A few months back, the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs delivered a commencement speech at a Benedictine College graduation ceremony, which quickly went viral. However, his speech was not without controversy. In the speech, the athlete gave backhanded compliments to female graduates, expressing his belief that their greatest achievement should be becoming a wife and a mother. These views are outdated and have been met with criticism from many. It is worth noting that Butker identifies as a Christian and often involves God in his controversial views.
During his speech, he criticized the LGBTQ+ community for what he called their “deadly sins.” He also took the opportunity to express his views on the inclusion of drag queens in the 2024 Olympic Games.
Harrison Butker hit back at the controversial ‘Last Supper’ moment
At the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris, a spoof was performed during the opening ceremony that depicted a scene resembling Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Summer painting, featuring drag queens. Some Catholics around the world, or at least a few delusional ones, claimed to feel “offended” and “persecuted,” stating that the Olympic Games were “mocking God.” Harrison Butker also made a hasty conclusion, expressing his disbelief by stating, “this is crazy” on an Instagram Story. He later quoted Galatians 6:7 from the Bible, saying, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”
Afterwards, he went online to upload a video and provide further context to his statement. He emphasized, “Let me be clear, God cannot be fooled. Whatever a person sows, they will also reap. If they sow to their own flesh, they will reap corruption, but if they sow to the Spirit, they will reap eternal life.”
In light of the controversy surrounding the opening ceremony, a spokesperson for Paris 2024 issued an apology, emphasizing that there was never any intention to disrespect any religious group. Anne Descamps, the spokesperson for the event, acknowledged that the ceremony was meant to celebrate community tolerance and believes that the goal was achieved. She expressed regret and offered apologies to those who may have been offended by the ceremony.
Fans reacted to Harrison Butker’s words
According to recent reports, the moment during the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony that resembled The Last Supper was not actually a reference to the painting. Instead, it was intended as a tribute to the Greek god Dionysus, who is closely associated with the Games. The scene was based on a French painting called the Feast of Dionysus, which was fitting given that the Games were being held in France. Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony, clarified that the scene was not meant to be a reference to The Last Supper. In fact, the official Olympics account on X stated that the “interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings.”
Although Harrison Butker received praise for speaking out about the misinterpreted moment, some fans attempted to bring him back down to reality and encourage him to see the bigger picture.
One fan criticized the Chiefs’ tweet about their team dinner by saying, “Dude, it’s the celebration of Dionysus not the last supper. You’re making us Christians look bad.” In response, another fan pointed out that the scene everyone believes to be the last supper is not actually described in the bible and questioned whether Da Vinci was even present. A third fan expressed concern about kicker Harrison Butker being a distraction for the team due to his ignorance of history. They emphasized that kickers cannot afford to be distractions, particularly based on their own ignorance.
Harrison Butker has once again caused controversy, showcasing his tendency to use Christianity as a means of sharing uninformed opinions. This behavior solidifies his position as a prime example of Wrongfully Using Christianity to Share Uninformed Opinions.
