Various Hobbs Act offenses, including kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery, have found a man guilty of participating in a violent crime spree last year.
According to federal prosecutors, Tonnaire McNair-Matthews, 24, drove into the back of a woman’s car while driving a stolen Jeep and then abducted her at gunpoint. They transported her from Delaware back to Pennsylvania, raped her at gunpoint, and forced her to provide the PIN for her accounts, which they later drained.
According to US Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, McNair-Matthews was one of four individuals who participated in a conspiracy to rear-end drivers and loot them when they stepped out to assess the damage.
“The defendants committed a horrific crime spree with disastrous repercussions. The coordination between my office and our state and federal law enforcement partners to bring Mr. McNair-Matthews and his coconspirators to justice was rapid and remarkable,” Weiss said. “We will continue to work together to get violent felons off our streets. I applaud the victim’s bravery and hope that the jury’s guilty decision provides some closure.
“The amount of harm and senseless violence McNair-Matthews and his coconspirators perpetrated in a single day is astounding,” Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings stated. “I am deeply grateful for the expert assistance of Deputy Attorney General Diana Dunn and the rest of our team, as well as the Delaware and Pennsylvania State Police and our partners with the FBI, in bringing them to justice and holding them accountable for the harm they’ve so callously inflicted.”
