The passing of James Seward, a former New York state senator, has been reported.
According to Duncan S. Daviem, the ex-chief of staff to Seward, he passed away on Saturday after fighting cancer.
Born and raised in Otsego County, the deceased was a proud product of the Oneonta public school system, having graduated from there at the age of 72.
After being elected in 1986, Seward dedicated over three decades of service as a state senator. Throughout his tenure, he represented the 50th and 51st Districts, which encompassed Schoharie, Greene, Otsego, Delaware, Ulster, Herkimer, Tompkins, Chenango, Cortland, and Cayuga counties. He ultimately chose to retire in 2020.
After Seward’s passing, Daniel Koerner, the Republican Chair of Otsego County, issued a statement.
“Today, Otsego County lost a legend as we mourn the passing of long-time Senator and esteemed statesman James Seward. His unwavering commitment and dedication during his decades of service in the New York State Senate significantly shaped our community and region. Jim’s leadership, integrity, and tireless efforts left a lasting impact that will be felt for generations. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Cindy and the entire Seward family during this difficult time.
While we are saddened by Jim’s passing, we also celebrate his remarkable contributions and the enduring values he championed. Senator Seward’s memory will always be cherished, and his legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.”
In a statement, Rob Ortt, the Senate Republican Leader, also shared his thoughts.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Senator James Seward, an outstanding public servant I was proud to call a friend, a colleague, and a mentor.
