On Tuesday, just after midnight, Ayden Burt, a 28-year-old Texas high school coach, was tragically shot and killed while attending a San Antonio conference at a rooftop bar. The incident appears to have been a random act of violence.
As per the initial report by the police, Burt was seated on the patio with her back facing the highway when a gunshot was heard and she was struck on her right rear shoulder.
In a recent post on X, Coach Rob Murphy shared his heart-wrenching experience, saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with Ayden Burt’s family and community. One moment, she was sitting right next to me, laughing and talking, and the next, she was bleeding in my lap. Despite our coaches’ valiant efforts to perform CPR and save her life, it was a traumatic and devastating experience. Ayden was looking forward to the upcoming year, and it’s truly heartbreaking to see her life cut short in such a sudden and tragic manner.”
Burt was a coach at the Jasper Independent School District.
Jasper School Superintendent John Seybold expressed his sadness in a statement about the passing of one of their staff members, Ayden Burt. “We ask for prayers of comfort for her family, as well as her extended family, the students and staff of Jasper ISD,” Seybold said.
According to the school district’s statement, students and staff will have access to continuous support.
Burt had been a part of the school district since 2019, where he taught English at both Jasper High School and the junior high. He also took on the role of being a Cheer Sponsor and coach.
The THSCA Coaches School and Convention provided a statement revealing that Burt was on the rooftop patio, facing away from Interstate 37 when a bullet hit her back. Despite being taken to the hospital, she passed away due to her injuries. It’s a tragic loss as she was only 28 years old.
At present, the authorities are investigating the shooting incident and have not yet found any suspects. The motive of the shooter is still unknown.
The San Antonio Police Department is seeking assistance from the public regarding the case.
