A man and his dog in New York narrowly avoid being struck by lightning

Matt Krass and his dog nearly dodged a lightning bolt that struck just outside their backyard in southern New York last week.

Given the anticipated thunderstorms in the area, Krass told FOX Weather he wanted to give his dog the opportunity to go outside first.

A doorbell camera captured the incident as Krass stepped outside with his dog.

Lightning hit around 25 feet away from where the two were standing, lighting up nearby trees. However, Krass, who was looking away at the moment, merely heard about the event.

“Before I knew it, there was this loud, amazingly loud, like, incredibly loud—like, the loudest sound I’ve ever heard in my life—bolt,” says Krass.

Despite not seeing the lightning hit, he was confident in what had happened. His dog dashed back inside, and Krass followed.

“I was just glad to be alive, and I thought, Let me get out of the risk of any more lightning coming my way,” he recalled. ”

He later looked outside to see if the lightning had caused any damage, but there was none.
