MUSC stops all gender affirming treatments for transgender youth And adults

Medical providers in South Carolina are now refusing to offer healthcare services to both transgender youth and adults.

On Tuesday, the Medical University of South Carolina officials declared that they will discontinue offering gender-affirming care.

As of May 21, a new law has been enforced that prohibits individuals under the age of 18 from receiving any type of gender-affirming care or procedures. The law also specifies that no public funds can be utilized, either directly or indirectly, for gender-affirming care.

Chase Glenn, the executive director of The Alliance for Full Acceptance, recently made the decision to transition and become a transgender man. In a candid conversation with our very own Kei’Yona Jordon, Glenn opened up about his personal journey and the challenges he faced during the transition process.

This was a process I saw a mental health counselor who validated that this was something I was going through, there were letters that were required and when I finally got the approval and gave myself my first testosterone shot it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulder.

While MUSC Health can no longer offer this specific service, we provide a vast array of other complex care, primary and behavioral health services that are accessible to all patients, including transgender patients.
