Former Kansas Speaker of House honored by Governor Kelly with flags at half-staff for state buildings

Governor Laura Kelly has issued an order to lower the flags at state buildings to half-staff as a tribute to the late Marvin William Barkis, former Kansas Speaker of the House.

The Office of the Governor officials stated that Governor Kelly issued a directive on Tuesday, July 23, in line with Executive Order #20-30. The order called for all state buildings, grounds, and facilities to lower their flags to half-staff immediately until the day of interment at sundown. This was done to pay tribute to Marvin William Barkis, the former Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives.

Governor Kelly expressed her condolences to the family and loved ones of Speaker Barkis. She acknowledged his contributions to the state of Kansas, highlighting his championing of legislation that propelled schools forward and supported families. His legacy will be remembered and treasured.

We will update this flag order as soon as we determine the date of interment.
