Tragedy struck when a 72-year-old man from South Carolina lost his life on Saturday after his kayak overturned in the waters close to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
On Saturday morning, as per Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s report, a man had set out on his kayak from the beach adjacent to Ramp 43, situated on the eastern side of Cape Point Campground near Buxton.
According to eyewitnesses at the beach, the kayak flipped over as the rider tried to catch a wave approximately 50 yards from the shore. Bystanders quickly swam out to assist, pulling the man from the capsized kayak and bringing him back to safety on the beach.
The man was given CPR by rescue crews in an attempt to revive him, but unfortunately, he was declared deceased at the location.
On social media, Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the kayaker.
The incident is currently under investigation by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
