US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee from Houston has passed away at the age of 74

The family of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee announced on Friday that the 74-year-old, who had served in Congress for over three decades, has passed away. Jackson Lee was a vocal advocate for her predominantly Hispanic and Black Houston district.

Known as ‘Congresswoman’ by her constituents, Sheila was a formidable advocate for her people and served them tirelessly for over three decades. The family of the lawmaker has stated that they have not yet finalized the funeral arrangements.

In the beginning of last month, Jackson Lee shared that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was receiving treatment. She mentioned that she may need to take occasional breaks from her Congressional responsibilities.

On June 2, Jackson Lee released a statement expressing her confidence in her doctors’ ability to devise a plan tailored to her specific illnesses. She acknowledged that the journey ahead would be challenging, but maintained her faith that she would be strengthened by God.

Following her passing, a prayer and praise vigil was held in support of her courageous fight. It has not been disclosed by Jackson Lee’s family or office whether her battle with cancer was the cause of her death.

According to her office, since winning her seat in 1994, the Democrat has achieved several noteworthy accomplishments. She is credited with the establishment of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

Working in her last days

A week ago, Jackson Lee spoke up for the welfare of CenterPoint Energy customers. She urged the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the utility company’s reaction to Hurricane Beryl.

In March, Jackson Lee secured her Democratic primary victory, and was just months away from beginning her 16th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the runoff election against John Whitmire, the attempt by the lawmaker to become the next Houston mayor failed in late last year.

In 1989, she was elected to the Houston City Council where she served the city until her congressional election. She later ascended to the Capitol after her successful tenure in the City Council.
