The morning of June 16, 2024, at the intersection of Powers Boulevard and Fountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs, a fatal crash occurred, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives. According to the El Paso County Coroner’s office, the victims have been identified as 51-year-old Emily Hoffman and 72-year-old Olga Guavala. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
Just before noon on June 16, Colorado Springs Police officers were called to the intersection of South Powers Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard in response to a three-car crash.
The CSPD investigation uncovered that a driver of the first car, traveling southbound on Powers Boulevard, ran a red light and collided with a second car. The impact of the collision caused the second car to strike a third car, resulting in the third car rolling onto its passenger side. The tragic incident claimed the lives of the driver of the second car, Guavala, and the passenger in the third car, Hoffman, who were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first car sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical attention.
According to the Colorado Springs Police, they have identified the driver of the initial car involved in the accident as Shawn Johnston, who is 40 years old. Johnston has been apprehended for two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and other traffic charges.
According to CSPD, Colorado Springs has witnessed its 28th and 29th traffic fatalities for the year. It’s worth noting that at this time last year, there were only 22 traffic fatalities in the area. Shockingly, there have been a total of 57 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs in the last 365 days.
