The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl in Houston has prompted an increase in requests for assistance from Alabama. Numerous calls are being received from Texas, and Alabama is responding to the best of their ability.
Amidst the sweltering Texas heat, there are reports of extensive flooding, toppled trees, and power lines down.
On Tuesday, Alabama Power received a call and promptly responded by dispatching 350 of its personnel to Houston.
The Huffman, Texas area, which is located approximately 25 miles outside of Houston, recently reached out to the Alabama Baptist State Convention asking for assistance.
According to convention leaders, a team of 75 individuals, primarily consisting of volunteers skilled in using chainsaws, will be dispatched to assist in clearing trees. The team is slated to depart this week and will be stationed in Texas for a minimum of one week.
Mark Wakefield, the Disaster Relief & Chaplaincy Ministry Strategist at Alabama Baptist State Convention, has stated that his team will be providing assistance to clean up the debris around homes affected by the disaster. The team will be equipped with chainsaws and heavy equipment to remove trees from houses. Additionally, volunteers will be sent to provide food for the team. The administration will be responsible for processing the job orders and the team is in the process of setting up a larger unit to provide more significant services for the community.
Wakefield acknowledges that there will be challenging days ahead in the task of clearing all those trees. However, he points out that the chainsaw volunteers are not only skilled but also view this assignment as an opportunity to make a positive impact.
