GCHS debate team competes well in various tournaments

The Garden City High School Debate team competed in a number of tournaments this month and qualified for the state tournament.

On Nov. 5, the team placed first overall at the Wichita Northwest tournament. Ale Facio/Kiley Kilgore took 1st in Open with a 4-0 record; Shawn Dreiling and Trasyn Crandall placed 4th with a 3-1 record; and Addy Vannaman/Carmen Tewell placed 6th with a 3-1 record.

The following Buffalo Debaters completed requirements to qualify for KSHSAA 2 Speaker State held Nov. 12.  They included: Ale Facio, Kiley Kilgore, Carmen Tewell, Addy Vannaman, Kirby Vo, and Vicky Le.  Addy Vannaman and Carmen Tewell also qualified for the Kansas Debate Classic to be held in January. 

On Nov. 9, the team competed in the Digital Home on the Range No. 5 virtual tournament. Ale Facio/Kiley Kilgore finished 4-0 and placed 2nd in Open; Michael Oswalt/Bryce Orlich also finished 4-0 and placed 1st in the JV division. Facio/Kilgore finishes were good enough that they qualified for the Kansas Debate Classic in January and Oswalt/Orlich qualified for the KSHSAA State 2 Speaker tournament in January.  

In the Home on the Virtual Range online tournament on November 2 Kria Roth and Mia Terrazas went 3-1 placing 4th (tied for 1st, dropped on tie-breakers).  In addition, GCHS debaters Bella Wilder, Scarlett Storer, and Mia Terrazas all qualified for KSHSAA 2 Speaker State with their records at the competition. 

On Oct. 29, the debate team placed 2nd in team sweeps at the Dodge City tournament. Kria Roth and Mia Terrazas went 5-0 in the Open division and won the tournament. Addy Vannaman and Carmen Tewell went 3-2 and placed 4th in Open.
