The Garden City Community College Music Department hosted the third annual Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) Learning Day on October 5.
The event was created to help prepare area high school music students for regional and state honor groups.
GCCC music instructors assisted and rehearsed with the music students in their respective musical specialties throughout the GCCC campus.
This year over 500 choir, band, and orchestra students were in attendance from 24 different high schools. This was a large increase compared to last year’s attendance.
“We are blown away at this year’s turnout. It’s amazing to be able to provide this service to the community and these students,” Renee Carmichael, GCCC Music Instructor, said. “This is the largest event that we host, and we are so grateful to have the facilities, instructors, and staff to accommodate us and make sure everything ran smoothly. We had a great day of musicmaking.”
In addition to spending the day preparing music, students also heard from GCCC music faculty about practice tips, how to prepare for auditions, and programs that GCCC has to offer.
