GCCC sophomore chosen as Miss Garden City Fiesta Queen

Heidy Aguilar, Garden City Community College sophomore, was recently selected Miss Garden City Fiesta Queen during the 2022 Fiesta Scholarship Pageant on September 9.

This annual scholarship pageant is sponsored by the Garden City Mexican Fiesta and crowns a title holder who has a passion for education, culture, community, and Garden City.

The $1,000 fiesta queen scholarship pageant is judged on six categories: personal interview, introduction, talent, evening gown, and an impromptu final question.

Aguilar shared her reason for competing.

“I joined the pageant very last minute. They needed more women to join, so my friend (Adriana the previous queen), reached out to me the week of and asked if I would be interested,” she said. “I thought it would be fun to do something outside of my comfort zone and the scholarship would be amazing.”

Aguilar will compete at Miss Kansas, a Miss America state competition, next summer.

Born and raised in Garden City, Aguilar is a sophomore majoring in music at GCCC. She is on the track team, first violin in the string quartet, and co-captain of the marching band’s color guard. She stays quite busy on campus and said she greatly enjoys her time at GCCC,

“My favorite thing about the college is the environment. My coaches, athletic trainers, and teachers are so supportive and encouraging,” she said. “I have always felt that I could count on them for anything. I trust them fully and have grown very fond of them. I could not do all that I do without their help and support.”

After graduating from GCCC, Aguilar plans to pursue a degree in Music Therapy and passing the Music Therapy Board Exam. Her dream is to work at a children’s hospital.
