Family event about creating life-long readers scheduled

Garden City Public Schools will host an event for families on Creating Readers for Life from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 22 in the Garden City High School Commons Area, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.

The free event will feature Coy Bowles a member of the three-time Grammy award winning Zac Brown Band, and Dr. Danny Brassell, America’s Leading Reading Ambassador.

There will be a light meal provided along with community services information available for parents and drawings for door prizes.

Coy Bowles is a teacher, storyteller, author of 5 children’s books, and founder of COYCO Creative. His passion for early learning and literacy has been shared through speaking engagements at many conferences including the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

In partnership with Lakeshore Learning, one of the largest U.S. educational companies, a social-emotional kit was developed based on Coy’s book Behind the Little Red Door.  Coy will be sharing stories and performing songs from the award-winning CD “Music for Tiny Humans”.

Dr. Danny Brassell will provide information about The Power of Parents, Creating Readers for Life.  He will focus on the magic of reading and encourage parents to make time to pick up books that are suitable for avid readers with busy schedules. He will share book recommendations and techniques on how to become a better and more consistent reader.  It doesn’t matter to him what people read, he just wants them to get turned on to reading.

For nearly three decades, Brassell has served as an educational advisor to students ranging from preschoolers to rocket scientists. While he has held a variety of titles and worked with leaders from a variety of fields and disciplines, he has always considered himself first and foremost a teacher.
