USD 457 District retirement receptions announced

Several school district staff are being recognized at upcoming retirement receptions to celebrate their many years of dedicated service.

  • On Thursday, May 5, Buffalo Jones Elementary School is hosting a reception for Principal Rafaela Solis, who is retiring after 35 years. A program is set for 5 – 6 p.m. with the reception to follow in the school’s gymnasium, 708 Taylor Ave.
  • Garfield Early Childhood Center will host a reception for Linda Artz, Dani Becker, Karen Kyler, and Deb Maestas from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 9 in the center’s cafeteria, 121 W. Walnut St.  

Artz is a music teacher retiring after 17 year of service in the school district.  Becker is a Parents As Teachers coordinator and is leaving after 40 years in the school district. Kyler is a teacher at the center and is retiring after 23 years in the district. Maestas is a Parents As Teachers parent advocate at the center and is retiring after 16 years in the district.

  • On Tuesday, May 10, a reception is scheduled from 5 – 7 p.m. for Kindergarten teacher Dalana Billinger, who is retiring after 33 years of service. The reception will be in the gym at the school, 805 W. Fair St.
  • On Thursday, May 12, Victor Ornelas Elementary School will host a reception for Frank Lucero, Pattie Peitz-Carroll, and Debbie Frizzell at 4:15 p.m. in the cafeteria, 3401 E. Spruce St. 

Lucero is a custodian at the school and is retiring after 22 years in the district; Peitz-Carroll is a first-grade teacher at the school and is retiring after 27 years in the district; Frizzell is part of the Nutritional staff at the school and is retiring after 32 years in the district.

  • Garden City High School’s reception for Kim Steele and David Duran will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, May 16 in the GCHS School of Public Service (Blue) Student Learning Center, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.  Steele does migrant education and is retiring after 34 years in the district; Duran is a social studies teacher and is retiring after 33 years in the district.
  • Also on Monday, May 16, Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center is hosting a reception for Ellen Rome, Robin Wolking and Liz Penner from 4 to 5 p.m. in the center’s cafeteria, 401 Jennie Barker Road. 

Rome is the head secretary at the school and is retiring after 15 years in the district; Wolking is a fifth-grade math teacher and is retiring after 20 years in the district; and Penner is a school nurse and is leaving after 17 years in the district.

  • Edith Scheuerman Elementary School Kindergarten teacher Susan Boyle, who is retiring after 36 years with the district, will be recognized at a reception at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 in the school gym, 1901 Wilcox St.
  • Garden City High School is holding a reception for Alice Urteaga, athletic department administrative secretary, from 2 – 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 in the GCHS Commons Area, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd. Urteaga is retiring after 34 years in the district.
  • A reception for Dr. Steve Karlin, superintendent of schools, is scheduled for 4 – 6 p.m. Friday, May 20, in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St. Karlin is retiring after 34 years with the district.
