USD 457 Superintendent interviews discussed

On Monday, March 7, the USD 457 Board of Education discussed the superintendent search process, interview questions prepared for candidates, and set the interview schedule. 

On March 9, the KASB screening committee will present its report and submit three to five candidates and one alternate to the board for its consideration. Interviews will be scheduled March 21-25.

In other business Monday:

  • The JROTC program was recognized for participation in the All-Service Nationals scheduled for this summer.
  • Garden City High School sophomore Sebastian Lopez was recognized as State Wrestling Champion, and GCHS Senior Shyla Cowles was recognized for qualifying as runner up for the National English Speaking Union Kansas City Branch Shakespeare Competition. 
  • The district’s Read Across America committee was recognized.
  • Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center students presented to the board about events and activities at the school during the school year.
  • Josh Guymon, Director of Special Education; Dianne Elliott, SEL Advisory Facilitator; and Kim Fisher, Mental Health Liaison reported to the board about the Social Emotional Learning and the Mental Health pilot.
  • The reconfiguration committee provided an update on its work studying the configuration of the grades at the elementary and middle schools in the district.
  • The board hear a report about the Transitional Kindergarten (TKI) program, which is intended to provide at-risk kindergarten students with additional help to build a strong educational base to help them be successful. 
  • The board learned that COVID numbers are down and very low in the district and community. The district will continue to keep the current operational protocols in place.
  • The board performed a first read and review of the ESSERs funding that the District Site Council has been working on for the last number of weeks.

The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Education is 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St.
