Music educators meet at GCCC

GARDEN CITY — The Garden City Community College Music Department hosted the second annual Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) Learning Day on Oct. 6.

The event was created to help prepare area high school music students for regional and state honor groups. GCCC music instructors assisted and rehearsed with the music students in their respective musical specialties throughout the GCCC campus.

Nearly 300 choir, band, and orchestra students were in attendance from 18 different high schools.

Renee Carmichael, music instructor, reflected on the day.

“After the last year and a half, it was heartwarming to walk through the halls and hear music all around you. These kids are excited to play music again,” she said.

In addition to spending the day preparing music, students also heard from GCCC music faculty about practice tips, how to prepare for auditions, and programs that GCCC has to offer.
