Garden City Public Schools will join schools from around the nation to celebrate Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7, 2020. Schools in the district are encouraging families to walk and bike to school or around their neighborhood during the month of October.
Since 1997, communities have been coming together for Walk to School Day. This year, the global coronavirus pandemic means that travel to school may be a little different than in prior years. In some places, schools are open and students are able to walk to school. In other places, the school trip might just be to the living room.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling. It encourages healthy habits, increasing physical activity among children, heightens awareness of traffic and pedestrian safety, and draws attention to environmental concerns around schools.
