On March 17, 2020, Governor Kelly issued a statewide order mandating all schools to close for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, to help “flatten the curve” and slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus. In the days since, many school districts have spent their spring breaks coming up with how they are going to continue education for the students they serve.
Many in the Greater Garden City area are transitioning to the “social distancing” way of life that has been suggested by state and local officials. For some, this means working from home or having staff reduced at their place of business; adjusting hours of when you take care of essential duties like grocery shopping, getting gas, etc.; and, staying home as much as possible. For parents in the USD 457 school district, they will soon be taking a very active role in the continued education of their children.
Garden City Public Schools has done a fantastic job of navigating this uncharted territory. Free breakfast and lunch are available Monday through Friday at many locations across the city. Teachers and administration have worked diligently to contact each family in the district to address their student’s continued plan of study. Social media posts are going out daily with updates and suggestions for activities during this time of “social distancing”.
In addition, Garden City Public Schools has implemented a “help page” for parents and teachers. The Continuous Learning page can be found at https://www.gckschools.com/coronavirus_info/parentresources and includes plenty of valuable information. Information included on the site are tips on how to join Zoom meeting, free online learning resources for kids ages kindergarten through eighth grade (registration is required), and science related resources. The site also features links to the Grab and Go lunch information, free digital book downloads and information for those that are needing internet access. If you need assistance, please contact the Technology Help Hotline at (620) 805-7178.
