GCCC, Colby CC sign fire science training agreement

GARDEN CITY — Garden City Community College and Colby Community College signed an agreement on Aug. 26 that creates a partnership between the two schools for fire science training in the Colby Community College service area.

According to a news release, GCCC will provide instruction and certifications for fire science within the Colby area and to local fire departments and will also develop a fire science pathway.

The new agreement will enable students who live and work in the Colby CC service area to remain there while taking general education credits through Colby CC and fire science credits through GCCC. Participants will also have the opportunity to complete a fire science certificate through GCCC as part of the agreement.

“As a college, we must seek opportunities to expand programs and offerings throughout western Kansas,” said GCCC President Dr. Ryan Ruda, adding that he appreciates the opportunity to work collaboratively with Colby Community College and the leadership of CCC President Dr. Seth Carter and

Brad Bennett, Vice President for Instruction and Student Services.

“Going forward, we must continue to work collaboratively and provide pathways for training and higher learning, specifically with programs that are unique to our community colleges,” Ruda said. “GCCC offers the only Fire Science program in western Kansas, and we have identified the need to develop highly qualified and trained individuals in western Kansas.”

Ruda also expressed appreciation for the leadership of Larry Pander, Fire Science Instructor at GCCC; Chuck Pfeifer, Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development; and Marc Malone, Vice President for Instruction, for their commitment to developing the partnership and to expanding the fire science program for western Kansas communities.
