YMCA celebrates grand opening of ‘Dome’ project

YMCA of Southwest Kansas CEO Chad Knight addresses the crowd Thursday during the grand opening of the YMCA Dome in Garden City.

GARDEN CITY — The Garden City Family YMCA celebrated the grand opening of the YMCA Dome on Thursday morning, located just northeast of Kenneth Henderson Middle School at 1706 E. Mary St.

The Dome began as a joint partnership with the City of Garden City, USD 457, and the YMCA, according to information on the YMCA’s Facebook page. Both KHMS and the YMCA needed additional gym space so they came together to create a mutually beneficial solution.

“It’s been a long journey,” said a visibly moved Chad Knight, CEO of the YMCA of Southwest Kansas, during the ceremony inside the facility.

The YMCA had originally hoped to open the facility last year but issues with the original contractor delayed the project’s completion. The YMCA switched contractors and the Dome was re-inflated in May.

The Dome is home to three multi-purpose courts for basketball, volleyball, futsal and more, surrounded by a walking track. The building will also have a functional fitness area with a Queenax machine and several other pieces of fitness equipment, and indoor baseball and softball training areas with batting cages, pitching mounds and soft toss.

The Dome will be the main location for YMCA sports programs, leagues, tournaments and special events. The YMCA plans to offer innovative programs with competitive leagues for all of southwest Kansas.

In a news release about the grand opening, Knight said, “This Dome will be a hot spot for our youth and provide a great partnership with the school district. I believe everyone will be amazed about the size and scope of the Dome and everything it has to offer. I can’t wait to see activities in our Dome and people using the Queenax machine and the Dome filled.”

Stacy Castoe will serve as the Dome and Operations Director. The YMCA plans to offer competitive youth leagues, sport specific training, functional fitness classes on the Queenax apparatus and all the current youth sports programs. All the YMCA teams will practice and play their games at the Dome. Kenneth Henderson will have their middle school teams use it for practices and games as well.

The Dome’s hours will be 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday; 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday
