Fankhausers to receive Good Scout Award

This Sunday, Nov. 4, the Santa Fe Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor Dan and Dick Fankhauser with the Good Scout Award, which was established in 1994 to acknowledge community leaders who have received extraordinary national-level recognition, fame or eminence within their field and have a strong record of voluntary service to their community.

The Fankhausers are celebrating the 50th year of their business, Rental Enterprise, LLC.

Dick Fankhauser is a graduate of Garden City High School and attended Garden City Community College and Kansas State University.  He was an active Scout in Troop 108 at First United Methodist Church of Garden City.

He is passionate about giving back to Garden City where he served as President of the Garden City Lions Club from 1969-70. Dick is past President of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce (1980).  He received the Award of Merit from the Chamber of Commerce in 1984.

Dick has given leadership to the Kansas Ready Mix Concrete Association as well as the Kansas Concrete Masonry Association.  For several years, he served on the board of Finney County United Way; Finney County Economic Development Board; Airport Advisory Board; and is current board chair of the Mariah Fund. Also, Dick served on advisory boards for Bank IV, and advisory Board of Commerce Bank and in the past was elected to the Garden City Commission.

Dick enjoys flying and has been a pilot 44 years; golfing and motorcycle riding for over 50 years. Dick is partner with Rental Enterprise, LLC.  He was awarded the Pioneer Award to the Roy and Helen Fankhauser Family.

Dick has two children, Alan Fankhauser, Manhattan, KS and Annette Bures, Loveland, CO.  He has one grandson, Ben who is an Eagle Scout as well as Alan.

Dan Fankhauser is a graduate of Kansas State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1967-1973 with rank of second lieutenant. Dan was an architect with Lyman, Cobb & Benson Architects from 1967-1971. He joined the family business, Fankhauser, Inc, in 1971 working with contractors and architects on many types of projects. Currently, he is general practice of architecture and partner in Rental Enterprise.

Dan has served as Chairman of the Garden City, Holcomb, and Finney County Area Planning Commission for the past 22 years. He is a past director of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce and served as member and president of the Lions Club of Garden City. He was awarded the Pioneer Award to the Roy and Helen Fankhauser Family. Dan has been a member of the Garden City Commission for the past nine years, served as Mayor in 2013-2014 and is incoming Mayor in 2019.  Dan is married to Vivian Fankhauser with five adult children and six grandchildren.

The Good Scout Award is given by the Santa Fe Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America upon the recommendation of a committee of community leaders.

The award will be presented at the 2018 Good Scout Dinner at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Clarion Inn Conference Center, 1911 E. Kansas Ave., Garden City.
