The Garden City High School drama department won 10 Jester Awards from the Music Theatre of Wichita on Sunday, May 6th.
GCHS was nominated for a total of 18 Jester Awards for the fall musical “In the Heights”, which was performed in November the Garden City High School Auditorium, and won 10 awards for Overall Production; Direction of Show – Barbara Hilt; Leading Actor – Johb Silva, sophomore, as Usnavi; Supporting Actress – Elena Lopez, senior, as Abuela Claudia; Stage Crew; Scenic Design – Barbara Hilt, Alice Hilt, and Kaci Bunch; Costume Design – Robyn Hilt; Lighting Design – Barbara Hilt and Alice Hilt; Sound Design – Barbara Hilt, Lyle Sobba and Francisco Becerril; and Lobby Display – Alice Hilt and Delaney DeSpain.
This year, 102 judges viewed 127 performances of 41 productions, involving more than 2,800 students and 41 schools across the state. The program began in Wichita, but now extends as far as Liberal, Hays, Salina, and Pittsburg, in addition to the greater Wichita area.
The Jester’s program honors schools in 25 categories. GCHS theatre students were honored to kick-off the show as the first school performance following a medley featuring GCHS students: Kimberly Loya, Colten May, and Johb Silva.
Music Theatre Wichita launched a program called the Jester Awards to honor excellence in high school musical theatre. The program recognizes the extraordinary amount of work, creativity, and dedication that faculty and students pour into their high school theatrical productions. Recognition is given to casts and crews, directors and designers – all who work to stage these great works of musical theatre.
