Several community agencies are distributing backpacks filled with school supplies today, Aug. 2, until 5 p.m. at Garfield Early Childhood Center, 121 West Walnut St.
The backpacks are for children who are in need of the school supplies to help give them a start to a successful school year. Families must provide proof of qualification for free or reduced meals or the SNAP Program to receive a backpack.
The distribution of the backpacks is part of the Stuff the Bus campaign July 15 and 16 in the community, which accepted donations of various school supplies needed for the school year including things like crayons, pencils and pens, spiral notebooks and paper, three-ring binders and more. Monetary donations were also collected to help assist with buying supplies and filling of the backpacks.
The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 14, with a half-day orientation for all students in grades kindergarten through fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth, and all students new to Garden City Public Schools. The first full day of school for Garden City Public Schools is Tuesday, Aug. 15, when all classes will be in session for the start of the 2017-18 school year.
