Lee Richardson Zoo will be celebrating International Red Panda Day Sunday September 17th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. Activities will be located just in front of the Wild Asia main entrance..
There will be fun crafts as well as activities for families to enjoy while learning more about red pandas. Have your face painted like a red panda or test your ability to gather bamboo like a red panda.
In addition to the games and activities available, everyone will have a chance to partake in a Keeper Chat at the red panda habitat located inside Wild Asia at 1:30 pm. Ask questions and learn more about Lee Richardson Zoo’s current family of red pandas which includes three new cubs born on August 12th of this year. Parents Ember and Charlie may be out in their exhibit periodically, but the cubs probably won’t be out until November.
Discovered 50 years before the Giant Panda, which genetic testing has shown to be unrelated red pandas are listed as endangered, with populations declining in part because of disease and habitat loss due to deforestation and fragmentation. They are in the Order Carnivora but they have a diet that consists mainly of bamboo.
