Schools honoring veterans, first responders this week

On Friday, Nov. 10, the student council at Kenneth Henderson Middle School will honor community veterans by inviting them to breakfast at 7:15 a.m. in the school’s atrium, 2406 Fleming St.

The school would like to have veterans whether they are active duty or retired from any branch of the military, to attend the breakfast and program.

Following the breakfast there will be a short presentation by the Junior Leadership Corps who will present the colors followed by the national anthem.  There will also be a performance by the school’s jazz band and the choir will sing a medley of service songs for each branch of the military.

Please RSVP to Brian Dinkel at Kenneth Henderson Middle School by Wednesday, Nov. 8, at bdinkel@gckschools.com, or by phone at 805-8525.

Also on Friday, Plymell Elementary staff and students will host a Heroes’ Breakfast as part of the Veterans Day celebration at the school. The school’s staff has invited personnel from the Garden City Fire and Police departments, Finney County Sheriff’s Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Finney County EMS, LifeTeam, and veterans to the breakfast. The school will be expressing its gratitude for everything that they do to keep our community safe.

The LifeTeam helicopter will be landing at the school at 8:30 a.m. Students will have an opportunity to watch the helicopter land on the playground at the school.

The school will serve school breakfast to the first responders at 8:30 a.m. The event provides a great way for the first responders to visit the school. It is also gives the students a way to get to know the first responders who serve the community on more of a personal level.
